Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis Jailed for 40 Years Over Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Killing

Former American gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for his role in orchestrating the murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. The 63-year-old received the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in a Las Vegas court, following his conviction for first-degree murder in August. Shakur was shot in a drive-by attack on September 7, 1996, while riding in a vehicle with music executive Marion “Suge” Knight after attending a boxing match. The rapper, who was 25 at the time, died six days later, leaving behind a musical legacy that continues to influence hip-hop decades after his death.Prosecutors argued that Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, helped organise the shooting as revenge for an earlier altercation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage at a Las Vegas casino. Although Davis was not accused of personally firing the fatal shots, authorities said he supplied the firearm used in the attack. Anderson, who was considered a possible gunman, died in an unrelated shooting in 1998. The prosecution relied heavily on Davis’s own accounts of the incident, including statements he made during a police interview and details he later shared in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, as well as subsequent media appearances. His defence maintained that his accounts were exaggerated or fabricated for publicity and financial gain, but the jury ultimately found him guilty. The sentencing marks a major development in one of America’s most closely watched unsolved murder cases, which remained unresolved for nearly three decades before Davis was arrested in 2023. During the hearing, Judge Carli Kierny stressed the lasting consequences of taking another person’s life, noting that Shakur had been deprived of his future and separated from his family. Davis has indicated that he intends to appeal the conviction. While the ruling represents the first conviction in connection with Shakur’s killing, the identity of the person who fired the fatal shots has not been conclusively established in court. Shakur remains one of hip-hop’s most influential figures, with his music, public image and untimely death continuing to attract worldwide attention.
