The Nigerian Correctional Service in Ogun State has arrested Iyabo Sowunmi for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row. She was arrested at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, during routine screening at the facility’s entrance, after officers allegedly discovered a substance suspected to be the psychoactive drug known as “Colos” concealed inside a sachet of powdered beverage.

The NCoS said the package was allegedly intended for Dare, following which Sowunmi was detained and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution. The incident comes amid concerns over attempts to smuggle drugs and other prohibited items into custodial facilities.

The Ogun State Controller of Corrections, Abioye Adesina, commended the officers for detecting the suspected contraband and reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other activities that could compromise prison security. He warned that anyone attempting to introduce prohibited substances into custodial centres would face legal action.
