The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of four major ports as part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen the country’s trade capacity.
The ports affected are Onne Port, Rivers Port, Delta Port and Calabar Port.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed the development, saying the upgrades are expected to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the ability of the ports to handle growing trade activities.
The modernisation programme is expected to cover port infrastructure, cargo-handling capacity and other facilities needed to support smoother maritime operations.
The government’s move comes as Nigeria continues to seek ways to reduce bottlenecks in the movement of goods and improve the competitiveness of its ports.
Improved port infrastructure could also support businesses that depend on imports and exports by making the movement of cargo more efficient and reducing delays across the logistics chain.
The Federal Government has increasingly focused on expanding Nigeria’s maritime economy, with port development identified as an important part of efforts to increase trade, attract investment and generate economic activity.
The modernisation of the four ports is therefore expected to form part of the broader strategy to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector and strengthen its contribution to the national economy.
