President Bola Tinubu has departed Abuja for Europe to begin a three-week vacation as part of his 2026 annual leave, with London, United Kingdom, as his first destination. The Presidency said the trip is a working vacation and that Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the break.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the President would return home to join the campaign activities ahead of the January 2027 general election. Another presidential aide, Sunday Dare, explained that the timing of the vacation followed several months of intensive engagement on governance, including economic and security matters, and the approaching political season.
Tinubu’s absence has already attracted political criticism, with former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar questioning the timing of the three-week trip amid Nigeria’s economic difficulties and insecurity. Atiku argued that the country currently needs stronger political leadership and greater attention from the President.
