The Kwara State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party and African Democratic Congress have rejected a new political advertising permit fee structure introduced by the Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency. Under the schedule unveiled ahead of the 2027 elections, presidential candidates would pay N100m, governorship candidates N50m, senatorial candidates N30m, House of Representatives candidates N10m and House of Assembly candidates N2m. The opposition parties described the charges as excessive and capable of limiting political participation.
The PDP questioned the legal and administrative basis for the charges, asking who approved them, how the amounts were determined and what services would justify the fees. The party said it would comply with legitimate regulations but would resist what it called an arbitrary financial burden that could give wealthy candidates and the ruling party an unfair advantage.
The ADC similarly described the N100m presidential fee and other charges as “taxation of democracy,” arguing that the policy could make political visibility dependent on candidates’ financial strength. The party threatened to challenge the fees through lawful means, including court action, and urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to direct KWASAA to withdraw or review the charges.
