Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued an Executive Order establishing a Coroner Inquest and Panel of Inquiry into the killings, shootings and violence that occurred at Naira and Kobo Junction in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on August 24, 2026. The panel, chaired by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, will investigate the circumstances of the incident, determine the number and identities of victims and establish the immediate and remote causes of the violence.

The inquiry will also examine the role of security operatives, including whether live ammunition was used and whether its use complied with the law, rules of engagement and human rights standards. The panel has powers to summon witnesses, obtain police and medical records, inspect relevant locations and recommend prosecution, disciplinary action, compensation and institutional reforms where necessary.

The Executive Order takes effect on August 31, with the panel expected to begin sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its report within 30 days of its first sitting. Adeleke assured victims’ families and residents that the investigation would be conducted transparently, stressing that no person found culpable would be shielded from justice, regardless of their position or political connections.
