The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two elderly men, identified as 68-year-old shoe repairer Moris Monday and 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom, over the alleged attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar. The suspects were arrested on August 23, 2026, following a complaint from the girl’s father.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Monday allegedly lured the girl into his room and attempted to sexually assault her on August 13 and 14. Effiom was also accused of luring the minor into his room and attempting to assault her on August 22. Community members reportedly apprehended the suspects before handing them over to the police.

The police said both suspects had made statements denying the allegations, while the victim was referred to a government-approved medical facility for examination. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible legal action, with the command assuring the public that the matter would be handled professionally and in accordance with the law.
