Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has urged Nigerians to resist what he described as foreign interference amid moves to release United States records linked to allegations concerning President Bola Tinubu from more than three decades ago. Buratai argued that the controversy could affect Nigeria’s international reputation, sovereignty and economic interests.
The retired general said a US court had reportedly set August 28, 2026, as the deadline for Tinubu, the FBI and the US Department of Justice to oppose the release of the documents. He maintained that allegations dating back about 33 years should not define Tinubu’s entire political career or Nigeria’s image, warning that renewed international attention could potentially affect investment, tourism, diaspora remittances and other economic interests.
Buratai also cautioned against allowing the matter to become a partisan political battle ahead of the 2027 elections. While stressing that public officials should remain accountable, he urged the Federal Government to pursue the matter through diplomatic and legal channels, arguing that Nigerians should defend the country’s sovereignty without turning the issue into an unconditional endorsement of the President.
