\n\nThe death toll from the Sokoto State boat accident has risen to 53, following the recovery of additional bodies from the river in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area.
The boat capsized on Thursday while transporting farmers and workers across a waterway. Reports indicate that the vessel was carrying more than 70 passengers, including women and children travelling to farms.
The incident has sparked grief across the community, with witnesses reporting that a large number of the victims were children, some reportedly between the ages of 10 and 15. Earlier reports said dozens of bodies had already been recovered and taken to a community mosque ahead of burial.
Police and emergency officials have continued recovery operations, while reports on the exact number of survivors and missing passengers have varied as authorities continue to reconcile figures. One police report stated that 77 people were aboard the boat, with only a small number rescued.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise, and communities often depend heavily on boats to reach farms and markets.
