Election observer group Kimpact Development Initiative has reported 17 election-related violence incidents across 10 local government areas during the August 15 Osun governorship election, with more than 44 victims recorded. The incidents included gunshots, physical assaults, intimidation and harassment, with Ejigbo and Osogbo recording the highest number of cases.
KDI said the violence disrupted voting at a polling location in Ejigbo, leading to the cancellation of the election there. The group also reported post-election violence and property destruction in parts of the state, while noting that the election-day incidents remained relatively localised and did not result in widespread disruption.
The organisation called on security agencies to investigate the incidents and prosecute those found responsible. It also urged authorities to ensure the prompt prosecution of 295 people arrested for various election-related offences, stressing that visible enforcement of electoral laws was necessary to curb impunity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
