\n\nPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, presided over a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking the first council meeting since June 29.
The meeting began shortly after the President arrived at the Council Chamber at about 2:30 p.m., with members of the Federal Executive Council observing the national anthem before proceedings commenced.
The return of the FEC meeting comes at a politically significant period, as Nigeria’s 2027 presidential campaign season gets underway. Tinubu is seeking a second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC), while opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, are expected to challenge his administration.
The 2027 contest is already attracting significant attention, with economic conditions, the cost of living, government reforms and public confidence expected to play major roles in the political debate. Reuters reports that while Tinubu’s reforms have attracted investor interest and strengthened some macroeconomic indicators, many Nigerians continue to face pressure from high living costs.
The FEC meeting also comes as the administration continues to defend its economic policies. Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said on Wednesday that the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration helped prevent a deeper economic and fiscal crisis, while acknowledging the significant short-term hardship experienced by households and businesses.
With the political season now gathering momentum, decisions and policies emerging from the Federal Executive Council are likely to receive increased public attention as the administration works to demonstrate its achievements ahead of the 2027 elections.
