Suspected hoodlums on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke shortly after he visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, triggering an exchange of gunfire with his security personnel. The incident occurred as Adeleke left the palace after receiving his Certificate of Return from INEC following his re-election in the August 15 governorship election.
The governor had arrived at the palace around 3:15 pm in a convoy of about 20 vehicles. Witnesses said the attackers approached in an unregistered Sienna vehicle through the Ita Olokan area, with the ensuing gunfire lasting about 12 to 15 minutes before the convoy left the area. Osun State Commissioner for Information Kolapo Alimi said the governor’s security team repelled the attackers.
The incident caused tension in parts of Osogbo, with sporadic gunshots reportedly heard around the area and some businesses shutting temporarily. While the state government initially said no casualties were recorded, the Osun State Police Command later confirmed that one person died and launched a full-scale investigation, promising to arrest those responsible.
