The Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Oladipupo Adebutu, has criticised Governor Dapo Abiodun over the seven-month suspension of the process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland. Speaking in Ijebu-Ode during the flag-off of the PDP’s 2027 campaign, Adebutu questioned why the vacant traditional stool had remained unfilled and accused the state government of unnecessarily delaying the process.
Adebutu also alleged that similar delays had affected the selection of other traditional rulers in Ogun State, including the Alaperu and Alaye stools. He claimed that some individuals in government were attempting to influence the emergence of a new Awujale and urged residents to vote out the APC in 2027, promising that the PDP would improve governance and living conditions.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who spent 65 years on the throne. The Ogun State Government suspended the selection process in January 2026, citing petitions from security agencies and stakeholders. The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, which is responsible for producing the next Awujale, has repeatedly appealed for the suspension to be lifted and the selection process completed.
