Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has expressed concern after finding several local government chairmen and senior officials absent from their offices during unannounced visits to six council secretariats. The governor inspected Kiyawa, Jahun, Miga, Kafin Hausa, Auyo and Hadejia local government areas on Tuesday as part of efforts to improve grassroots governance and accountability.
Namadi said the widespread absenteeism was unacceptable and warned that local government councils could not be administered virtually or through proxies. He stressed that chairmen were elected to serve residents and must be physically available to perform their official responsibilities, describing them as the engine room of grassroots administration.
The governor recalled that he had warned the 27 council chairmen against absenteeism when they were sworn in in 2024. He vowed to take action against officials who failed to comply, insisting that effective local government administration requires regular presence, accountability and direct engagement with the people.
