The Federal Government, through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, offers eligible Nigerians access to National Housing Fund mortgage financing to buy, build, improve or renovate owner-occupied homes. The NHF mortgage currently carries a 6 per cent annual interest rate and can run for up to 30 years, with the available loan amount determined by factors such as income, affordability and property value.
To qualify, applicants generally need to be adults with a verifiable source of income and contributors to the National Housing Fund. Employed applicants must typically have contributed for at least six months, while self-employed applicants may need a longer contribution history. Required documents can include proof of NHF contributions, recent payslips and bank statements, identification, employment or appointment letter, proof of equity contribution and other supporting documents.
Applicants can begin by registering on the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope housing portal, creating an account and searching for an eligible property. After selecting a property, applicants can choose the mortgage option and complete the application process. The official portal also provides an affordability calculator to estimate how much financing an applicant may qualify for based on age, income, loan duration and down payment.
