Sporadic gunshots were fired on Saturday night at the Union Baptist Primary School in Osogbo, Osun State, where the Ataoja D Ward 4 collation centre for the governorship election was located. The shooting, reportedly involving security personnel, occurred between 9:15pm and 9:30pm, forcing residents and others around the centre to flee for safety.
Witnesses reported that security personnel fired several shots into the air while canisters were also released within the premises. The incident continued for more than 15 minutes, causing panic as people near the collation centre ran for cover. The reason for the shooting was not immediately established.
The incident occurred as officials continued collating results from the Osun governorship election at various centres across the state. The election has been closely watched amid heightened security concerns and earlier warnings over possible political violence.
