Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed that its official X account was subjected to an attempted unauthorised compromise, prompting the military authorities to activate cybersecurity measures to secure the platform. The disclosure was made on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who said efforts were ongoing to restore full control of the account.
DHQ urged members of the public, the media and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content posted from the account while the incident is being resolved. The warning is particularly important because the account is used to share official information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The military said it remains committed to protecting the security of its information channels and providing accurate updates. In the meantime, Nigerians were advised to rely on DHQ’s verified accounts on other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and its WhatsApp Channel, for official information.
