The Presidency has extended the deadline for Nigerians and other stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026. The extension was announced by the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, chaired by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. The group said the additional time was intended to give individuals, institutions and organisations a greater opportunity to make detailed and meaningful contributions to the proposed legislation.
The proposed bill is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for a new policing architecture capable of responding more effectively to Nigeria’s security challenges. The working group said stakeholders should particularly consider issues such as sustainable funding, command and control, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, coordination between security agencies, accountability and safeguards against political interference or abuse. Legal practitioners, civil society organisations, state governments, security professionals, academics and members of the public have all been encouraged to participate in the consultation process.
The National Policing Bill portal became operational on August 3, when the Presidency opened the public consultation process. All memoranda and position papers must now be submitted through the official portal before the new August 21 deadline. After the consultation and review process, the Presidential Working Group is expected to submit a final, implementation-ready Executive Bill to President Bola Tinubu for consideration on September 3, 2026, before it proceeds to the legislative stage.
