Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, has reported to the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning over comments allegedly made during an All Progressives Congress campaign event ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. The senator arrived at the command at about 2:35pm on Wednesday in the company of the Commissioner of Police in charge of election and security, Samuel Erale. The police had earlier directed Fadahunsi to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department after a video containing remarks attributed to him went viral.
The police said the comments were considered threatening and capable of inciting violence and heightening tension ahead of the August 15 election. Reports surrounding the viral footage alleged that Fadahunsi made remarks targeting supporters of the Accord Party, prompting concerns among political stakeholders and calls for an investigation. The controversy intensified after Governor Ademola Adeleke described the alleged statement as a serious security threat and called for the senator to be investigated.
Fadahunsi, however, has maintained that the viral video was edited in a way that misrepresented the context of his remarks. After his interrogation, he said he was addressing what he described as attacks and killings involving APC supporters in Ilesa and other parts of Osun, rather than calling for violence against opposition members. He also expressed concern that such attacks could discourage voters from participating in the election. The police investigation is expected to establish the full context of the statement and determine whether any offence was committed.
