The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of renovation work at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Abia State, saying the facility is now in a significantly better condition than when he last visited. Nafiu made the remarks on Wednesday during his inspection of the ongoing 2026 Batch B Stream II orientation exercise at the camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area. He disclosed that the first phase of the renovation had been completed, while preparations were underway for the commencement of the second phase.
The NYSC boss also highlighted the important contributions being made by corps members deployed to Abia, particularly in the health, education and engineering sectors. He revealed that more than 53 doctors and 112 nurses are currently serving across the state, alongside teachers and engineers who are contributing to various communities. Nafiu urged the corps members to respect the culture and values of Abia residents and serve as good ambassadors of the scheme, while appealing to residents to welcome them as members of their communities. He stressed that stronger cooperation between the NYSC and the Abia State Government would help maximise the benefits of the scheme.
The NYSC DG said he would use his planned meeting with Governor Alex Otti to present additional requests for support for the orientation camp and the scheme’s activities in the state. The Abia State Coordinator, Yunusa Tanimu, disclosed that 1,753 corps members, comprising 760 males and 993 females, had been registered for the current orientation exercise. He added that camp activities, including military drills, lectures, sports and the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, were progressing smoothly. Recent improvements include the procurement of additional chairs, painting of the camp entrance and outer walls, and construction of a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the multipurpose hall.
