The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has proposed the introduction of an annual ₦200 dues payment for Nigerian students, with its leadership indicating that payment could eventually become a requirement for students seeking mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed the proposal while explaining efforts to establish a more direct and reliable funding system for the student body. Under the proposed arrangement, students could be required to provide evidence of payment of the dues before being mobilised to NYSC orientation camps.
Babatunde said the proposed system is intended to address financial difficulties faced by NANS and reduce its dependence on student union governments and institutions to collect and remit dues. According to him, between 80 and 90 per cent of student union governments reportedly fail to remit expected dues, leaving the national association financially constrained and limiting its ability to address students’ concerns. He said NANS was considering working directly with relevant agencies to facilitate collection from students, rather than relying solely on existing structures within universities and other tertiary institutions.
The proposal has generated attention because of its potential connection with NYSC mobilisation, which could make payment of the relatively small levy significant for graduating students. NANS has indicated that discussions with relevant authorities are ongoing and that the proposed arrangement would be subject to the necessary cooperation and approval before implementation. The association maintains that a more dependable funding structure would strengthen its capacity to represent Nigerian students and resolve complaints, while details of how the proposed ₦200 payment would be collected, verified and enforced have yet to be fully established.
