Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has said the resources currently available to the state are insufficient to meet its rapidly expanding infrastructure needs, citing rising construction costs and the state’s growing population as major challenges. Hamzat made the remarks during a radio programme monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, where he explained that the scale of infrastructure required across the state continues to increase as more people and businesses move into the nation’s commercial hub. He stressed that the government must continually expand roads, transportation networks, drainage systems and other essential infrastructure to keep pace with Lagos’ development.
The deputy governor explained that the cost of delivering infrastructure has increased considerably, making it more difficult for the state to execute projects at the pace required. He noted that Lagos’ rapidly expanding population places additional pressure on existing facilities, many of which were designed for a much smaller population. According to Hamzat, the situation requires innovative financing, stronger revenue generation and sustained investment to enable the government to respond effectively to the state’s infrastructure deficit. He also highlighted the importance of prioritising projects based on their impact on residents and the overall development of the state.
Hamzat’s comments come as the Lagos State Government continues to pursue major infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation, easing traffic congestion and addressing flooding and other urban challenges. The state’s rapid population growth has made infrastructure planning increasingly complex, with pressure on roads, public transport, housing, water systems and waste management continuing to rise. The deputy governor’s remarks underline the need for increased funding and long-term planning as Lagos seeks to maintain its position as Nigeria’s economic centre while providing infrastructure capable of supporting its expanding population and economy.
