\n\nPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s formal entry into the World Energy Council (WEC), describing the development as an important step toward strengthening the country’s position in the global energy sector.
The President, in a statement issued on Saturday, August 8, congratulated the newly inaugurated Nigerian leadership of the council, including Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa, Chief Executive Officer Bala Wunti, and members of the inaugural board.
The Presidency said Nigeria’s participation in the World Energy Council would provide the country with greater opportunities to engage with global energy stakeholders and contribute to discussions shaping the future of the sector.
Nigeria’s membership comes at a time when the Federal Government is seeking to attract more investment into the energy industry, expand domestic energy production and improve access to reliable power.
The World Energy Council is a global platform that brings together stakeholders across the energy sector to discuss issues including energy security, sustainability, investment and emerging technologies.
The development is also expected to give Nigerian energy experts and policymakers a stronger platform to share the country’s experiences while learning from energy developments and policies in other parts of the world.
For Nigeria, which remains one of Africa’s major oil and gas producers but continues to face challenges around electricity supply, energy infrastructure and investment, participation in the global council could provide opportunities for deeper international collaboration.
President Tinubu’s administration has repeatedly identified the energy sector as a major component of its economic reform agenda, particularly as the country seeks to increase investment, strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The President’s endorsement of Nigeria’s participation in the council signals the government’s intention to position the country as a more active player in global energy discussions.
