Residents of Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos State have called on the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to urgently restore electricity after parts of the neighbourhood were left without power for almost two weeks. The prolonged blackout was reportedly caused by a transformer fault and has disrupted daily activities for households and businesses in the affected areas. Residents particularly appealed for the restoration of supply to Alhaji Hakeem Odumosu Street and other affected parts of Lekki Phase 1, while expressing frustration over what they described as poor communication and an inadequate response from the electricity distribution company.
The residents said the outage had imposed significant financial pressure on households, with some reporting that food items had spoiled because of the prolonged lack of electricity. Others who rely on generators have had to spend considerably more on petrol and other fuel costs to maintain basic household activities and keep businesses running. One resident, Taiwo Bolodeoku, described the situation as disturbing and disheartening, while others urged EKEDC to provide clear information on the cause of the fault and give residents a definite timeline for restoring supply.
The latest complaint adds to longstanding concerns over electricity reliability in the Lekki axis. Residents in parts of the area have previously complained about inadequate transformers, feeder faults, voltage fluctuations and prolonged outages, while EKEDC has said it is implementing infrastructure upgrades to improve supply. In March, stakeholders in the Lekki-Ajah corridor engaged the distribution company over persistent power problems, with issues including ageing distribution infrastructure and insufficient transformer capacity identified as contributing factors. Residents are now calling for an immediate solution to the current fault and more durable investment to prevent repeated prolonged blackouts in the area.
