The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has assured Nigerians that passport application, processing and issuance will continue without disruption despite the ongoing transition to a centralised passport booklet production system. The Service said the reform, which has generated public concern, is strictly an operational upgrade aimed at improving the security, efficiency and integrity of Nigeria’s passport issuance process. It stressed that applicants can continue to submit applications and collect their passports at any designated passport office in Nigeria or at Nigerian embassies and consulates abroad.
According to the NIS, the migration to the Central Personalisation Centre at its headquarters in Abuja is being implemented in phases to ensure a smooth transition without interrupting services. Under the new arrangement, passport booklets will be printed and security-personalised at the central facility before being dispatched to passport offices nationwide and overseas missions for collection. The Service explained that all passport offices will continue to function as centres for receiving applications, biometric capture and passport issuance, while the reform is expected to eliminate manual intervention, strengthen document security and improve accountability.
The Immigration Service urged members of the public to disregard rumours suggesting that passport services have been suspended, reaffirming its commitment to delivering efficient and technology-driven services. It added that the centralised production system is designed to align Nigeria’s passport management with international best practices by enhancing operational capacity and reducing the risk of fraud and document abuse. The NIS assured applicants that existing application procedures remain unchanged and that the nationwide migration will continue according to schedule without affecting access to passport services.
