The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a self-proclaimed spiritualist, Odigie Moses, in Edo State over allegations of cyber-enabled blackmail involving an Indian woman. According to the anti-graft agency, the suspect allegedly convinced the victim that he possessed supernatural powers capable of solving her life-threatening challenges. Investigators said Moses persuaded the woman to undergo a nude spiritual cleansing ritual, during which explicit videos of her were recorded without her knowledge for later use in an alleged extortion scheme.
The EFCC alleged that after obtaining the videos, the suspect threatened to release them online unless the victim paid him $1,100. The commission said the woman, fearing public embarrassment, reportedly complied with the demand before later reporting the incident, prompting an investigation. Acting on intelligence, operatives tracked Moses to Ekpoma in Edo State, where he was arrested. Authorities said electronic devices and other items believed to be relevant to the investigation were recovered during the operation.
The anti-graft agency stated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect targeted other victims through similar methods. It warned members of the public to be cautious of individuals who claim to possess supernatural powers and demand compromising acts or financial payments under the guise of spiritual assistance. The EFCC added that Moses will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, reaffirming its commitment to combating cybercrime, online extortion and other technology-driven financial offences.
