\n\nPresident Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with junior personnel set to receive raises of up to 80 percent as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve troop welfare and strengthen national security.
According to the Presidency, the new salary structure will take effect from September 1, 2026. Under the adjustment, personnel from the rank of private to staff sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 percent, while warrant officers up to colonels will receive a 50 percent increase. Senior officers, including generals, will see their salaries rise by 30 percent.
The government said the pay review is intended to boost morale among security personnel who continue to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country. Officials also noted that improving the welfare of soldiers remains a key part of the administration’s broader strategy to modernize the military and enhance operational effectiveness.
The new salary structure is expected to increase the military’s annual wage bill substantially, reflecting the government’s commitment to investing more resources in the nation’s defence sector. Analysts believe better remuneration could help improve motivation, reduce attrition, and enhance the military’s ability to recruit and retain skilled personnel.
Many Nigerians have welcomed the development, expressing hope that improved welfare for troops will translate into stronger security operations and greater success in tackling insecurity nationwide.
