Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested the manager of Mbiokporo Cemetery in Uyo and a grave digger for allegedly exhuming a freshly buried corpse and stealing its casket. The case came to light after a vigilant resident spotted two men transporting a casket on an unregistered motorcycle late at night and alerted authorities. One suspect, identified as Nsikak Effiong, was arrested at the scene, while his accomplice fled. During interrogation, Effiong allegedly confessed that they removed the corpse from the casket and planned to sell the casket for financial gain.

Further investigations led to the arrest of the cemetery manager, Elijah Matthew Edet, who police say admitted to conspiring with the grave diggers, claiming it was his first involvement in such an offence. Officers recovered the stolen casket and the motorcycle used in the operation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and determine whether others were involved.
