The Osun State Government has announced plans to challenge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in court after the anti-graft agency directed First Bank to place a “Post No Debit” restriction on one of the state’s accounts. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Oluwole Jimi-Bada said Governor Ademola Adeleke had authorised legal action, arguing that the freeze could disrupt government operations and insisting the governor is not using public funds for his re-election campaign.
According to the state government, the EFCC issued the directive without first obtaining a court order, a move it described as unlawful and unconstitutional. Osun officials maintained that while the commission has the authority to investigate financial transactions, it cannot legally freeze a state government’s account without judicial approval, and vowed to seek redress at the Federal High Court.
The EFCC later defended its action, saying the account freeze followed an ongoing investigation into the handling of state funds and what it described as suspicious financial transactions. The commission said the measure was intended to protect public funds while investigations continue, as the dispute unfolds just days before the Osun State governorship election.
