The Federal Government has assured federal civil servants that payment of the outstanding ₦35,000 monthly wage award arrears will begin before August 15, saying the release of funds is in its final stage. The assurance was given during a meeting between the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, and leaders of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC), as organised labour pressed for the implementation of pending workers’ welfare agreements.
The government also confirmed that outstanding promotion arrears are being processed, including previously omitted beneficiaries. Officials said reconciliation of the wage award payments has been completed, while relevant ministries and agencies have been directed to fast-track the settlement of other pending labour issues, including salary relativity concerns and peculiar allowances.
Labour leaders welcomed the renewed commitment but urged the government to ensure the promised payments are made within the stated timeline to maintain industrial harmony and workers’ confidence. The ₦35,000 wage award was introduced in 2023 as a temporary measure to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal and the rising cost of living.
