President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for about 250,000 military personnel. According to the Presidency, the new package will take effect from September 1, 2026, as part of efforts to improve troop welfare, boost morale and strengthen national security.
Under the revised structure, personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent, while officers from Colonel to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent pay rise. Senior officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. The new package will raise the military’s annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, according to the Presidency.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the salary adjustment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of service personnel and supporting the Armed Forces in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities. The announcement follows earlier assurances by Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru that the Federal Government was working on a fresh pay review for military personnel.
