Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has said Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s biggest mistakes were attempting to build an independent political structure too soon after taking office and trying to operate without the support of the political platform that brought him to power. Wike said he was surprised that Fubara began pursuing his own political agenda within his first 100 days as governor, describing the move as a sign that his successor underestimated those who supported his emergence.
Speaking during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Wike said he had expected Fubara to consolidate on projects initiated by his administration, including the Port Harcourt Ring Road and other major infrastructure developments, instead of charting a separate political course. He argued that continuity would have helped Rivers State build on the progress made during his tenure.
Despite his criticism, Wike suggested that Fubara has since adjusted his approach, saying recent developments indicate the governor has corrected those earlier political mistakes. The comments come amid efforts to rebuild relations between the two leaders after a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.
