The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed lawyers, court officials and litigation staff to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official engagements at the Supreme Court. The directive, contained in a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, was signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, and took immediate effect as part of efforts to uphold professionalism at the apex court.
According to the memorandum, the use of “Barrister” before names is considered inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards expected within the Supreme Court. All affected personnel have been instructed to remove the title from official correspondence, court records, identity materials and every other official engagement, while heads of departments and unit heads are expected to ensure full compliance with the directive.
The new policy applies specifically to official activities within the Supreme Court and is aimed at promoting uniformity and professional decorum in the administration of justice. The directive has sparked discussion within the legal community, with many lawyers debating its implications for long-standing professional practice and courtroom etiquette.
