The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, has called on the Federal Government to issue a formal apology and provide compensation over his assassination during the July 29, 1966 counter-coup. Speaking on behalf of the family, Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi said the late military leader was unfairly portrayed and deserved posthumous justice, reconciliation and official recognition for his service to the nation.
The family argued that Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed leadership to restore order after Nigeria’s first military coup and should not have been held personally responsible for the political crisis that followed. They maintained that his killing remains a painful chapter in the country’s history and urged the government to acknowledge the injustice by offering a public apology and appropriate compensation to his family.
The renewed demand comes as Nigeria reflects on the events surrounding the 1966 military coups, which reshaped the country’s political landscape and deepened ethnic divisions. The family said an official apology and reconciliation would not only honour Aguiyi-Ironsi’s memory but also contribute to national healing and unity by addressing historical grievances.
