The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, has expressed concern over the growing disconnect between Nigerian tertiary institutions and industry, saying many graduates lack the practical knowledge and skills required to meet employers’ expectations. Speaking at the unveiling of a 10Gbps fibre-optic infrastructure and smart campus initiative at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, the monarch said the weak link between academia and industry has reduced the relevance of research and graduate training.
Oba Matemilola attributed the challenge to inadequate investment in research and innovation, noting that many Nigerian institutions are not properly equipped to produce industry-driven solutions comparable to those in advanced economies. He expressed optimism that the new digital infrastructure would strengthen practical learning, research, innovation, and commercialisation, helping students acquire skills that are directly relevant to the workplace.
The Rector of MAPOLY, Dr. Babatunde Jolaoso, described the smart campus project as a major milestone that would boost the institution’s global competitiveness and improve teaching, learning, and research. Stakeholders said the initiative is expected to bridge the long-standing gap between classroom education and industry needs while preparing graduates for the demands of the modern workforce.
