Professor Wole Alamu, husband of Oyo school principal Rachael Alamu, has revealed that he blocked the phone numbers of the kidnappers who abducted his wife after weeks of negotiations because their repeated threats were seriously affecting his health. Speaking during a thanksgiving service following her rescue, he said the constant calls and messages left him emotionally exhausted and caused his blood pressure to rise, forcing him to stop communicating with the abductors.
According to Alamu, he spent about three weeks speaking with the kidnappers before deciding that continuing the conversations could cost him his own life. He said he told himself, “You cannot kill me here and kill her there. Choose one,” before blocking their numbers. The professor added that the kidnappers later confronted his wife in captivity, threatening to kill her because he had cut off communication. However, she remained resolute, insisting they would not take her life.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Alamu described his wife’s abduction as the greatest trial his family had ever faced but praised the swift response of security agencies after the incident. He also thanked religious groups, individuals and organisations within and outside Nigeria for their support, saying the experience strengthened his faith and reminded him of the importance of remaining steadfast during difficult times.
