The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has directed its members in Ekiti State to begin mobilisation for peaceful protests following the remand of the immediate past Students’ Union Government President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), James Adio. NANS President Akinteye Babatunde described the court’s decision as a miscarriage of justice, alleging that Adio was remanded over a case in which he was originally the complainant rather than the accused.
According to NANS, the planned demonstrations will take place at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Adio is released. The association claimed the case, which it said involved alleged cyberbullying and the unlawful circulation of private media, was diverted from its original focus, resulting in Adio’s remand alongside the defendants until August 4, 2026. It also called for the recusal of the presiding magistrate and an investigation into the conduct of officials involved in the prosecution.
NANS reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students and warned that it would petition the National Judicial Council and other relevant bodies if its concerns are not addressed. As of the time of the report, the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice had not publicly responded to the allegations made by the student body.
