The Edo State Government has announced plans to demolish buildings erected on waterways and flood channels as part of measures to reduce flooding across the state. Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EDOSEMA), Jerry Idahosa, said many structures have been built on the Benin moats and natural water channels, while indiscriminate dumping of refuse has blocked drainages and worsened flood risks.
Idahosa disclosed that the government has begun identifying structures obstructing waterways and warned that affected buildings would be removed to restore the natural flow of water. He also revealed that authorities are compiling the names of victims affected by recent flooding and have established temporary camps to accommodate displaced residents while relief efforts continue.
The state government urged residents to stop dumping waste in drains and waterways, stressing that preventing floods requires both government action and public cooperation. Officials said the demolition exercise forms part of a broader strategy to protect lives, reduce environmental hazards and strengthen Edo State’s flood management system during the peak of the rainy season.
