Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo over allegations that he bribed the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, to initiate impeachment proceedings against him while they were in office. Atiku described the claims as unfair and politically motivated, arguing that it was wrong to make such allegations after Na’Abba’s death when he could no longer respond.
In a statement titled “Reply to Your Inaccurate Posture: ‘How Obasanjo Deceived Us in 2003′”, Atiku questioned why Obasanjo had waited until Na’Abba’s passing to raise the accusation if it were true. He said, “The grave is not a witness box,” insisting that invoking the name of a deceased person in a political dispute denied Nigerians the opportunity to hear the other side of the story and was contrary to cultural values.
The exchange follows Obasanjo’s renewed claim that Atiku financed an impeachment plot against him through the late Speaker during their administration. Atiku rejected the allegation outright, accusing the former president of attempting to rewrite history and exploit the memory of a respected statesman for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
