The Katsina State Primary Health Care system, with support from UNICEF, has intensified efforts to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus through the second phase of a Tetanus-Diphtheria (TD) vaccination programme targeting women of childbearing age in Kaita Local Government Area. The week-long exercise, which runs from July 20 to July 27, aims to immunise girls and women aged 15 years and above against the preventable disease, which poses serious risks to mothers and newborns.
Health officials said the vaccination campaign has been integrated into routine immunisation and nutrition services to improve access and increase acceptance. They noted that awareness campaigns are also helping to dispel misconceptions that the vaccine is meant only for pregnant or married women, stressing that every female aged 15 and above is eligible. Beneficiaries praised the initiative, saying health workers had educated them on the importance of completing the recommended vaccination schedule.
UNICEF and the Katsina State Government urged all eligible women and girls to visit the nearest health facility to receive the vaccine, describing it as a critical step toward protecting mothers and newborns from tetanus and improving maternal and child health across the state.
