The Cross River State Government has extended the suspension of all scrap metal-related activities across the state by an additional month as part of ongoing efforts to combat vandalism and tighten regulation of the sector. The extension, announced by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Ani, will remain in force until August 23, 2026, following the initial suspension approved by Governor Bassey Otu earlier this year.
According to the government, the extension will allow authorities to complete a comprehensive review of the laws, policies and regulatory framework governing scrap-related activities. Officials said the review is aimed at strengthening oversight, protecting legitimate operators and preventing criminal elements from using the scrap metal trade as a cover for vandalism and the theft of critical public infrastructure.
While acknowledging the impact of the continued suspension on lawful businesses, the state government maintained that safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring public safety remain its top priorities. It also warned that the ban remains fully in effect and that anyone found engaging in prohibited scrap-related activities during the extension period will face legal consequences.
