The Federal Government has issued a seven-day flood warning for 17 states, urging residents in vulnerable communities to take precautionary measures as heavy rainfall is expected to increase the risk of flooding. The advisory, released by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), covers the period from July 21 to July 27, 2026, with authorities warning that medium-level flooding could affect several river basins and low-lying areas.
The states listed in the advisory include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto, and Zamfara. NIHSA urged residents, especially those living along floodplains and riverbanks, to remain alert, follow official weather updates, and relocate if evacuation becomes necessary. Emergency response agencies were also advised to activate preparedness measures in anticipation of possible flooding.
The latest advisory forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing flood monitoring efforts during the rainy season. Authorities reiterated the need for communities to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, and cooperate with emergency officials to minimise the risk to lives and property.
