The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four police officers accused of extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja. The incident was disclosed by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, who described the officers as criminals unfit to wear the police uniform.
According to the police, the officers abandoned their assigned duty posts and set up an unauthorized checkpoint around the Banex area of Wuse, where they allegedly extorted motorists. Unaware of Dr. Aliyu’s identity, they reportedly forced him to withdraw ₦53,000 through a Point of Sale (POS) operator, pay the transaction charges, and then shared the money among themselves. Following investigations, the officers were tracked down and taken into custody.
The FCT Police Command said investigations are ongoing and assured the public that any officer involved in extortion, illegal checkpoints, or other forms of misconduct will face disciplinary action. The command also urged residents to report cases of police misconduct, reiterating that officers have no authority to compel motorists to surrender their phones for searches without lawful justification.
