The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber accused of attacking a commercial motorcyclist and stealing his motorcycle in Ibadan. According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, allegedly posed as a passenger before striking the rider, Muhammadu Kamilu, with an iron hammer along Adeniji Estate, Apata, on July 16.
Police said operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) responded swiftly after receiving credible intelligence, leading to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle along with the iron hammer allegedly used in the attack. The victim and a good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who tried to intervene during the assault, sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to operating as a lone robber targeting commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas. The police said investigations are ongoing to determine his involvement in other similar crimes, while Commissioner of Police Abimbola Olugbenga urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to support efforts to combat crime across the state.
