The death toll from the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen above 5,000, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. The two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, struck within a minute of each other on June 24, causing widespread destruction across the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas.
Rodríguez said 5,069 people have now been confirmed dead, with the majority of fatalities recorded in La Guaira. Thousands more were injured, while rescue and recovery operations continue in affected communities. The disaster also left tens of thousands homeless, with authorities and humanitarian organisations working to provide emergency shelter, medical care, and relief supplies.
The earthquakes are among the deadliest natural disasters in Venezuela’s recent history, causing extensive damage to homes, roads, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure. As recovery efforts continue, the government has appealed for international assistance to support reconstruction and aid the thousands of families displaced by the tragedy.
