The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged mob killing of 21-year-old Emmanuel Effiong, who was reportedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing chickens and eggs from a poultry farm in Uyo. Police said the suspects allegedly buried the victim in a shallow grave in an attempt to conceal the crime.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, investigations were launched after authorities received credible intelligence and a viral video showing the victim being brutally attacked by a group of individuals. Preliminary findings revealed that Effiong was assaulted with sticks and machetes on April 19 following accusations of theft at a poultry farm in the Mbak 4 Community, Uyo Local Government Area, before later succumbing to his injuries.
The police said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the lynching, while assuring residents that everyone connected to the incident will be brought to justice. The command also urged the public to avoid jungle justice and instead report suspected crimes to security agencies for lawful investigation and prosecution.
