The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing tougher penalties for traffic-related offences, including a proposed ₦50,000 fine for anyone convicted of hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial vehicles. The bill, which is awaiting presidential assent, aims to reduce distractions in public transport and improve the safety of commuters.
Under the proposed legislation, motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion could face a ₦50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. The bill also raises the penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000, with offenders also liable to up to two years’ imprisonment. In addition, the fine for violating speed limits, disobeying traffic lights, road signs and other traffic control devices has been increased to ₦100,000.
Lawmakers said the amendment is designed to strengthen the FRSC’s enforcement powers, improve compliance with road safety regulations and reduce road crashes nationwide. The revised legislation lists 52 traffic offences with updated penalties and will only become law after it is signed by the President.
