\n\nThe Federal Government has launched a $500 million agricultural investment fund aimed at boosting food production, improving food security, and attracting private sector investment into Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The initiative, unveiled by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a regional investment summit in Abuja on Wednesday, will initially focus on the Niger Delta region, where the government hopes to unlock the area’s vast agricultural potential despite its long-standing dependence on oil production.
According to government officials, the fund will support key sectors including aquaculture, palm oil, rice cultivation, cassava processing, and marine resources. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, encourage modern farming techniques, and improve value chains from production to processing and export.
The investment will be financed through partnerships involving the Federal Government, multilateral development institutions, and private investors. Authorities believe the initiative will help reduce Nigeria’s reliance on food imports while increasing local agricultural output and strengthening rural economies.
Officials also noted that improving agricultural productivity remains one of the government’s major priorities as Nigeria continues to address rising food costs and the effects of climate-related challenges on farming.
Economic analysts have welcomed the announcement, saying the success of the programme will largely depend on transparent implementation, access to financing for farmers, and continued investment in infrastructure such as irrigation, roads, storage facilities, and electricity.
If effectively managed, the new fund could significantly improve food availability, increase farmers’ incomes, and contribute to long-term economic diversification beyond the oil sector.
The launch marks one of the country’s biggest agricultural financing initiatives in recent years and underscores the government’s commitment to making agriculture a major driver of economic growth and national food security.
