The Lagos State Government has urged residents to adopt healthier lifestyles as part of efforts to improve public health and reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. Speaking at the 2026 Lagos Health Fair held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stressed that prevention remains more effective and less costly than treatment. He encouraged residents to embrace regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, routine medical check-ups, adequate sleep and stress management to maintain good health.
Abayomi noted that many illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity and heart disease, can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes. He added that the state government is expanding access to preventive healthcare through public awareness campaigns, health screenings and community-based initiatives aimed at promoting early detection and healthy living. Health experts at the event also advised Lagosians to avoid tobacco use, limit alcohol consumption and make regular exercise part of their daily routine to improve overall wellbeing.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through preventive medicine and public education, urging residents to take personal responsibility for their health. He said building a healthier population would not only improve quality of life but also enhance productivity and reduce the pressure on healthcare facilities across Lagos State.
