The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has claimed that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), declined his invitation to a public debate because he believed he could not successfully defend or compare his record in public office. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Umahi said he had challenged Obi to a debate focused on their respective achievements as former governors, insisting that he was prepared to defend his own record in Ebonyi State.
Umahi argued that his administration transformed Ebonyi through major infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges and public buildings, adding that his achievements as governor remain visible across the state. He alleged that Obi avoided the proposed debate because it would have highlighted differences in their performances while in office. The minister maintained that his comments were intended to encourage accountability and allow Nigerians to objectively assess the records of political leaders.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with leading political figures increasingly defending their records and challenging opponents over governance. As of the time of the report, Peter Obi had not publicly responded to Umahi’s latest claims.
